March 1963 Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service Dairy Extension Office Lafayette, Indiana CERTIFICATE AWARD OF MERIT FOR MERITORIOUS SIRES The following rules and regulations will govern the certificate award of merit program for the recognition of meritorious dairy sires in Indiana, as sponsored by the Indiana State Dairy Association in co-operation with the Dairy Extension Office. 1. A dairy sire shall be considered as qualified when a sire summary report is received from the USDA. This sire summary will be the source of the production information used to determine the award. The following basis will be used in determining the awards: A. A Bronze Certificate will be awarded a sire when 5 or more of his daughters average 5 percent above their respective breed average* in milk production. They must maintain or increase milk production above their herd-mates and have butterfat production of not less than -5 pounds compared to their herd-mates. B. A Silver Certificate will be awarded a sire when 8 or more of his daughters average 10 percent above their respective breed average in milk production. They must maintain or increase milk production above their herd-mates and have butterfat production of not less than -5 pounds compared to their herd-mates. C. A Gold Certificate will be awarded a sire when 10 or more of his daughters average 15 percent above their respective breed average in milk production. They must maintain or increase milk production above their herd-mates and have butterfat production of not less than -5 pounds compared to their herd-mates. 2. Any registered dairy sire, a majority of whose daughters complete records in Indiana herds, is eligible for a certificate award of merit. 3. The certificate will be awarded to the owner of the sire at the time the records are accepted, thereby qualifying said sire, providing said owner is a bona fide member of the Indiana State Dairy Association. 4. DHIA - DHIR and HIR records are used in preparing the sire summary report. This report will be the sole source of information used in determing the award. 5. It is not necessary that all the daughters used in qualifying a sire be owned in one herd, or in any one state. 6. A sire is entitled to receive no more than one Bronze, one Silver and/or one Gold award. 7. Awards are made by the Indiana State Dairy Association. * Breed averages used as published in the US DA yearly report of DHIA Lactation Averages.
