FIGURING GREENHOUSE PLANT COST: HEATING

Greenhouse producers often find it difficult to allocate heating cost on a per pot/plant basis. The following computer generated tables provide a quick reference to help estimate this cost for the northern (Fort Wayne) and southern (Evansville) areas of the state given the yearly heating cost, container spacing, and percent greenhouse space utilization.
Assumptions:
Percent of total heating per month is based on the average heating degree (base 65°F) for the last ten years in Fort Wayne and Evansville. Although total heating degree days are different each year, those differences are reflected in yearly heating cost when using the tables. The percent fuel use per month also varies but not greatly from the ten year average particularly when adding over several months.
