The Board of Trustees met this day, pursuant to adjournment, at the University; present his Excellency Gov. T.A. Hendricks, John Purdue, John Sutherland, A.B. Claypool, M.L. Peirce and J.A. Stein. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The Secretary laid before the Board a communication from the Executive Department announcing the resignation of Col. B.C. Shaw, reading as follows:“Executive Department Indianapolis Oct. 19th, 1874. Hon. J.A. Stein, Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Purdue University, Sir:By direction of the Governor, I have the honor to inform you that he has this day received and accepted the resignation of Benjamin C. Shaw as a Trustee of Purdue University. Please communicate this fact to the Board. Very respectfully yoursSamuel R. Downey Private Secretary.” The Secretary at the same time laid before the Board the following communication received by himself from Col. Shaw, which was ordered to the spread upon the minute-book, viz:“Indianapolis Oct. 19th, 1874Hon. J.A. Stein—Dear Sir, Having been elected by the people of Indiana to an important state office I have deemed it my duty to resign my place as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Purdue University, and have accordingly tendered the same to the Governor this morning. In severing my connection with the Board permit me through you to thank each and every member of the Board, as well as the Faculty, for the uniform courtesy that has been extended to me while a member. With my best wishes for success I am Truly yours, B.C. Shaw.” On motion of Mr. Peirce it was ordered that Mess. [Messieurs] Purdue and Claypool, with Prest. [President] Shortridge be a committee to confer with the State Board of Education at Indianapolis
