TitleLake Man-i-tou : Indian tradition part missing
CreatorWinter, George, 1810-1876
Description"Lake Man-i-tou Indian Tradition part missing" (title from verso of last page, handwritten in pencil) AMs, 2p. The legend of the Lake Manitou monster excited much attention in the press in 1838. When George Winter was travelling to an Indian council in that year, he stopped in Rochester and there heard much talk of recent sightings (description given). Indians would not fish in the lake, and soundings had never reached the bottom. Plans were made for an expedition to the lake to investigate the legends.
