| Description Continued | Has received letter from Hook to Col. Lewis H. Sands, Hook's nephew, acknowledging receipt of "a water color sketch" made of Sands at Kee-waw-knay Village councils. Mentions Sands' assistance in sketching Indians there. Sands forwarded a letter from G.W. to Hook. Hook viewed the "council scene" painting he sent to Pepper, now at the Indian Department. Description of painting (small size, attempt at fidelity). Hopes Pepper will convince Commissioner of Indian affairs to commission a larger version. Describes his artistic training; time in London; arrival in New York in 1831; studies at National Academy of Design; move to Logansport in spring of 1837 to see the Indian councils; mention of Pepper, Sands, Profit, and Edmunds. Convening of council of chiefs and Judge Edmunds, Plans to leave Indiana soon. Enjoyed painting an "entirely new" subject (the Indians). Appreciates Hook's compliments and interest, especially as Hook is a friend of Washington Irving. |
