| Description | "Mem. relating to visit to Tippecanoe B.G. and To Prophet's Town-after an absence of 29 years" (title from verso) AMs, 1 p. (written on back of preprinted insurance form) A visit to the Battle Ground on July 24, 1869 reveals many changes since his first visit in 1840. Timber has been cleared, solid roads built to Prophet's Town and across the swampy prairie; the trees where Daviess fell (sketched by George Winter) were cut down for the railroad line; Hiram Shaw's house has been built. In 1840, a fence with two gateways surrounded the battle-ground; it is now gone, although the state is obligated, under the terms of John Tipton's donation of the site, to build a permanent fence. Notes along margin (possibly from published volume?) regarding numbers of forces and casualties in the Battle. |
