| Description Continued | Some years ago, Slocum talked of commissioning from G.W. a painting of Deaf Man's Village, but did not do so. G.W. has recently been working on revising his journal of 1839, which includes some previously unpublished information regarding G.W.'s visit to Frances in that year, as well as illustrations of Deaf Man's Village, the Osage village, and "Nan-matches-sin-wa" (Chief Godfroy's home). Portraits of the Chief, and of Frances, her daughter Kick-ke-se-qua, and Captain Broulliette will also appear. Although the journal may not be published in G.W.'s lifetime, he will leave it to his family. It is folio size and nearly 100 pages long. This will be separate from other volumes he is also preparing. A large painting of Deaf Man's village, and a 29x36 full length portrait of Frances, have been bought by John Purdue for Purdue University. G.W. thought Slocum would be interested in these matters, and he can provide him with any paintings on this subject he may wish. |
