CreatorWinter, George, 1810-1876
Description"Indian About the beard Cole's statements" (title from verso; AMs, 2 p. (1 sheet)
Description ContinuedEuropean artists, not having seen Indians, tend to depict them covered with animal-like hair. On the contrary, Indians never have beards, and shave off any stray hairs that grow. Cole, a Chippewa educated at Oberlin, said that after adapting white men's habits, he began to grow a beard, and his skin assumed a sticky texture.
