| Description Continued | A story is told of "Day Dawn" or "Spotted Fawn, " the daughter of a chief, who fell in love with a French trader. The match was opposed by the chief, so they had to meet clandestinely; G.W.'s painting shows her awaiting his coming. They were caught together by her father; the trader slipped out of the wigwam to his canoe, while she delayed the chief and his party by putting on her lover's clothes. The chief mistook her for her lover and shot her dead. |
