| Description | "Joseph Barron-Indian Interpreter on the Tippecanoe Battle Ground-1840" (title from verso, written in pencil) AMs, 2 p. (written in pencil) |
| Description Continued | George Winter toured the Battle Ground with Barron in the fall of 1840 and learned much from him. Barron did not participate in the battle, as the interpreters were kept safely on the sidelines. Barron discounted stories that the Prophet's prayers were audible over the din of battle, but the shouted orders of the leading warriors and the rattling of deer hoofs to signal attacks were quite able to be heard. As it was dark when the severest fighting took place, it was the calls of the warriors that announced their locations, or the cessation of those calls that indicated their fall. The Prophet stood outside the fighting, in a cluster of trees on a slight rise, across the swampy prairie. This position gave him an easy escape route via Prophet's Town and the Wabash once the battle turned against the Indians. |
