| Description Continued | The rocky ledge on the northwest side of Burnett's Creek, inaccurately called Prophet's Rock, was actually a well-known rattlesnake den. George Winter sketched the battleground from the top of this rock in 1840. In 1830, the bones of the soldiers who died in the battle were collected and interred in a large box surrounded by a panel fence. The trees that marked the spot where Daviess fell have been used by Hiram Shaw for a fence, and other tree stumps remain on the rise where the Prophet stood during the battle. This is near Hiram Shaw's house at the edge of the marshy prairie. |
