| Title | Passage from the Book of Ecclesiastes |
| Other Title | Bible. O.T. Ecclesiastes. Latin |
| Description | This large leaf comes from a Bible produced by monks of the famous Winchester School of illumination. The Latin text, which derives from the Book of Ecclesiastes of the Old Testament, is arranged in two vertical columns, written in brown ink. |
| Description Continued | The illuminator has skillfully matched the colors of the large foliate initial "O" on the right with the color of the ink. The initial is painted in gold leaf and set within a blue and brown, framed panel. A bird, drawn in white outlines, stands inside the initial; floral ornament fills the rest of the panel. From the initial there extend two long, leafy vines. This type of spreading plant ornament is characteristic of many Gothic initials. Beginning with the "O, " the text reads as follows: "A great anxiety has God allotted, and a heavy yoke, to the sons of men; from the day one leaves his mother's womb to the day he returns to the mother of all living, his thoughts, the fear in his heart, and his troubled forebodings till the day he dies - whether he sits on a lofty throne or gravels in dust an ashes, whether he bears a splended crown or is wrapped in the coarsest of cloaks..." |
