| Description | Leaf from a manuscript Antiphonary written on vellum in black and red in a fine, gothic hand. The musical notation consists of square notes on a four line stave. The manuscript is probably of late 15th century French origin. In the early 15th century initials and miniatures were heightened with burnished gold. In the latter part of the century, brushed gold, of which this leaf is an example, was used. The size is 9 3/8 x 6 3/4 inches. |
| Description Continued | Usually Antiphonaries were huge volumes placed on lecterns so that the whole choir might sing from them. This leaf, however, is from one of the much rarer smaller volumes made for the use of an individual. Of particular charm are the initials delicately wrought in color and further decorated with white tracery against a brushed gold background. In some cases flowers of fruit, emblematic of various Christian virtues, are entwined about these graceful initials. Antiphonal singing is said to have been introduced into Christian worship by Ignatius in the first century, after he had a vision of angels singing in alternate choirs. Antiphonal singing came to the Latin church through Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, who compiled the first Antiphonary or words for Antiphonal singing. The form of the Antiphonary used in modern times is mostly the work of Gregory the Great who lived in the 6th century. |
