The beautiful initials are written in red or blue and set within gold leaf frames; floral designs fill the interstices. Delicate, blue ivy vines sprout from each letter. Beginning in the upper left and proceeding vertically down the left and right columns of the text, the initials are an "F, " "N, " "D, " and "H." The rubrications identify the relevant passages of the Gospel of Luke. Starting in the lower right with the initial "H", the translated text reads as follows: "This is the woman about whom Luke the Evangelist writes. She was an unclean and sinful woman. She loved many men..." |
