Abstract of InterviewDavid Landgrebe is a native Hoosier. He received a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering in 1956, a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering in 1958 and a PhD in 1962 from Purdues School of Electrical and Computing Engineering. Prior to accepting a faculty position in 1962 at Purdue in the School of Electrical and Computing Engineering, he held positions with Bell Telephone Laboratories, Murray Hill, Interstate Electronics Corporation, and Anaheim California and Douglas Aircraft Company. He recounts serving as director from 1969 to 1981 of LARS [Laboratory For Applications of Remote Sensing] and the growth of the lab. Landgrebe talks about legacy of various Heads of Electrical & Computer Engineering and service on a number of National Research Council and NASA Advisory Committees such as NASA Space Station Science and Applications. He is the winner of a number of awards such as Life Fellow Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers, Fellow American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Fellow American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2005, Landgrebe was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. His area of specialty in research is communication science and signal processing, especially as applied to earth observational remote sensing.
