Abstract of Interview
Alexander
King
recounts
his
years
in
England
where
he was
born
and
raised.
He
received
his
Bachelors
and
Doctorate
in
England
before
coming
to the
United
States
as
post
Doctoral
Fellow
at
MIT.
Then
King
moved
to the
State
University
of
New
York
at
Stoneybrook
,
New
York.
He was
appointed
Head
of the
School
of
Materials
Engineering
at
Purdue
University
on
July
1
,
1999.
King
talks
about
the
definition
of
materials
engineering
,
teaching
styles
,
challenges
,
strategic
plan
and
diversity
at
Purdue.
He was a
Jefferson
Science
Fellow
from
2005
to
2006
and he
discusses
the
program.
He also
discusses
a
recent
grant
from the
U.S.
Department
of
Education
GAANN
(Graduate
Assistance
in
Areas
of
National
Need
Program).
King
left
Purdue
on
December
31
,
2007
to
become
Director
of the
Ames
National
laboratory
which
is
owned
by the
U.S.
Department
of
Energy
and
run
by
Iowa
State
University.
