Abstract of InterviewJohn Carlson is the son of a professor at Denison University. He talks about growing up in an academic environment. Following the receipt of BS in Mathematics from Denison, he went to Johns Hopkins and earned Ph. D. in Political Economy. His career path prior to his appointment at Purdue was an Actuarial Trainee for Mutual of New York, research aid at Princeton University and Visiting Assistant Professor at Cornell University. He began his tenure at Purdue in the Krannert School of Management in 1962 and was the Loeb Professor of Economics from 1989-2004. He served as Chair of the Economics Department Policy Committee in 1969-1971 and 1978-1980. He taught courses in Macroeconomics at both the undergraduate and graduate level and served as major professor for 58 Ph.D. recipients from 1965-2005. A NSF Research grant on Expectations and Inflation was received in 1974-1976 and he published in the area of inflation and asymmetric output adjustments, economic surveys and scientific method, price forecasts. Carlson was the recipient of numerous awards including Phi Beta Kappa, Pew Fellowship in International Affairs, Harvard University, co-Winner Award for Outstanding Research, from International Investment Forum in 1996.
