Nelson Jr., professor of genetics, University of Wisconsin, were among those receiving honorary degrees at Purdue's 125th commencement exercises. The men first discovered high lysine corn in 1963 while members of Purdue's School of Agriculture faculty. They were cited "for a landmark contribution toward feeding a hungry world through the improvement of proteins available in corn."
