| Description | Educational Aid for Afghanistan set - Eleven United States colleges and universities Monday (Sept. 16) formally approved formation of a consortuim to assist in development of engineering education at Kabul University in Afghanistan. The formal agreement was approved at a meeting on the Purdue University campus at West Lafayette , Ind. Ambassadors of both Afghanistan and the United States were on hand for the signing of a contract among the 11 institutions and Educational Services Incorporated, Watertown, Mass., the same day that their Majesties, the King and Queen of Afghanistan, visited Purdue farms and the School of Home Economics. Signing for the Afghanistan government is Dr. Abdul Majid, ambassador to the United States. At left, seated, is John M. Steeves, American ambassador to Afghanistan. At right, seated, is Gilbert Oakley, vice-president of ESI. Standing, from left, are Dr. George W. McNelly, director of the division of applied technology, Purdue University; Prof. Norman Gay, dean of the College of Engineering, Notre Dame University, and steering committee chairman, and Shepherd Brooks, ESI program director. |
